What Is TRICOPAT?

TRICOPAT is a CE-marked medical device for hair and scalp treatment, developed and assembled in Faenza, Italy. It was built around one clinical problem: many well-formulated scalp therapies never reach the hair follicle because the outer layer of the skin is designed to keep them out.

Most active ingredients used for hair loss are too large to pass through intact skin on their own. Growth factors, for example, weigh roughly 6,000 to 17,000 daltons, while the skin barrier mostly lets through molecules under about 500 daltons. TRICOPAT solves this by opening a temporary pathway through the scalp and guiding the serum towards the follicle, all without needles or injections.

Since 2015, the platform has been used in more than 60 countries, with over 200,000 treatments performed worldwide.

Three Technologies in One Session

TRICOPAT combines three technologies in one device, one handpiece, and one appointment:

  • Skin Patting® — A patented head with five double-cone microtips creates superficial microchannels at a fixed depth of 0.25 mm. The cone shape lets the skin itself stop the movement, which keeps the treatment precise and comfortable. Each pulse also stimulates local microcirculation.
  • Iontophoresis — A low-intensity electric current, delivered through a trichological cap with eight electrodes, moves the charged active ingredients towards the hair follicles instead of leaving them on the surface.
  • Photostimulation — Red LED light at 632 nm reaches about 1 to 3 mm into the skin and supports cellular energy production. Optional blue LED light at 465 nm works on the scalp surface when the treatment plan calls for it.

Together, they prepare the scalp, deliver the serum, and support the treated area in one continuous session.

What Can TRICOPAT Help With?

The strongest clinical experience with TRICOPAT is in the two most common forms of hair loss:

  • Androgenetic alopecia — Male and female pattern hair loss, where follicles gradually shrink.
  • Telogen effluvium — Diffuse shedding after stress, illness, hormonal changes, rapid weight loss, or certain medications.

Physicians also use TRICOPAT as part of personalized plans for:

  • Alopecia areata, especially for patients who want to avoid repeated injections
  • Preparation for and recovery after hair transplant surgery
  • Inflammatory scalp conditions, such as seborrhoeic dermatitis

Every plan starts with an accurate diagnosis, so your doctor will confirm whether TRICOPAT is right for your type of hair loss.

The Benefits of TRICOPAT

  • Needle-free and injection-free delivery of active ingredients to the scalp
  • No blood draw or preparation time
  • Comfortable sessions with no anesthesia needed
  • Approximately 20 minutes of treatment time
  • No downtime, so you can return to your day right away
  • Can be combined with existing hair loss therapies
  • A standardized protocol, so results can be tracked from session to session
  • Suitable for both men and women

What Does the Research Show?

TRICOPAT has been studied by the research group of Professor Bianca Maria Piraccini and Dr. Michela Starace at the Department of Dermatology of the University of Bologna:

  • 2021 — A 60-patient study on androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium reported improved hair density, thicker hair shafts, and reduced shedding at the 12-month follow-up.
  • 2024 — A case series on alopecia areata incognita reported that inflammatory scalp signs disappeared in four of five patients.
  • 2025 — A study of 20 men and menopausal women who had not responded to at least 12 months of standard therapy reported significant improvements in hair density and shaft diameter.

No adverse events were reported in the 2024 and 2025 studies.

The TRICOPAT Treatment Experience

Each session follows the standardized TRICOGENESI® protocol and takes about 20 minutes:

  • Assessment — Your doctor reviews your progress and may take photographs or trichoscopy images under the same conditions each time.
  • Phase one (about 10 minutes) — The growth factor serum is applied, and the Skin Patting® head works across the scalp. Most patients feel a light rhythmic tapping, often compared to a firm massage.
  • Phase two (about 10 minutes) — The trichological cap delivers iontophoresis and LED light at the same time. Most patients find this the most relaxing part of the session.

Mild, temporary redness of the scalp is common and settles quickly. The microchannels close on their own, and bleeding and pain are not expected.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Hair grows in cycles, and a resting follicle needs about two to three months before new growth begins. That is why TRICOPAT follows the hair cycle rather than rushing it:

  • Four core sessions, spaced about one month apart
  • Two additional maintenance sessions
  • A full course of four to six months

Further maintenance sessions can be planned based on your progress. Each patient receives their own TRICOGENESI® kit, with a personal patting head and serum used throughout the course.

Who Should Not Have TRICOPAT?

TRICOPAT is not suitable during pregnancy or for patients with a cardiac pacemaker, a cochlear implant, or cranial metal plates or implants. Patients who are breastfeeding, recently had surgery, or have an active inflammatory scalp condition need an individual assessment first. Your doctor will review your medical history before your first session.
